Hair Project in Progress

Some in-progress pictures are more ridiculous than others. XD

Tonight's project is dyeing my regrowth, and the post-bleach result is pastel silliness.

I've been successful at dyeing my bangs purple. :) Though my natural color is a medium/dark brown, it bleaches out easily. Bleach with 20 volume developer takes it to yellow in 15-20 minutes. And I'm closing in on a dye that produces the shade of purple I want. Arctic Fox Purple Rain is just about the right color.

Most of my hair is still black. After the series of salon disasters, I have given up on changing it to purple. I think I'm going to wait until the regrowth is a few inches, and then try for a purple/black ombre.

  1. It actually looks rather nice, like a sunset! Good luck with the dyeing!

    1. Yes, I agree. If I wanted pastels, this would be a nice color combo. Though I'd try to do a better job of blending the colors. :)

  2. I know people who would kill for hair that looks like that. I know it isn't your style, but it is quite neat looking.
Good luck with the continued progress.

    1. I didn't word my post very well. I agree the colors are neat. The poufy way I'd pinned up my hair is what struck me funny. I looked like a pastel frilled lizard. XD
      Thanks!

  3. That is a really pretty shade of purple and I think the purple/black ombre will look stunning!

Hair transitions can be a such a pain! I remember my mom walking around with cartoon yellow hair for 2 months after she tried to strip the color out of her hair and fried it.

I bleach my bangs with Revlon Colorsilk Ultra Light Sun Blonde so I can dye them pink (Splat Pink Fetish in the summer, Luscious Raspberry in the winter) and I dye the rest of my hair black. Fortunately, my hair is short so if I ever decide to NOT do black anymore, it won't take as long as the transition. But I've been doing my hair this way since 2007 so I doubt I'll quit any time soon. LOL

    1. Thanks! I've always been overly picky about having "roots," so there's a bit of a mental hurdle with ombre.

Short hair is much easier to transition! I like the idea of having shorter hair, but the reality is that styling my thick hair becomes a major hassle when it's shorter. So I'm trying to be patient.

    2. I know what you mean about roots! The "stripe" by the part drives me batty. ;)

  4. The two-toned roots/shaft look is very "in" now, though!

    1. Indeed. And according to Pinterest, so are braids and other hairstyles that show off the two tones.

    1. I'm not normally fond of pink, but pink hair looks nice with purple.

  6. Seriously, thank you for documenting your process.
It's really great hearing hair dying from a non-professional perspective. Not to say that I think it looks bad at all, it's quite unique and as Laura noted, looks exactly like a pretty sunset. However, because it isn't what you were going for, I hear you out. I appreciate what you're doing here, and I hope you manage to land on something you love!

    1. Attempting to change the color of my previously-dyed-black hair was an absolute nightmare! But I'm glad I didn't give up entirely because it turns out that dyeing my virgin hair is quite easy. The tricolor was indeed unique and I almost felt bad putting purple dye on it!
