Hairstyle Makeover: Tomorrow is Cut Day

After much deliberation on the idea of changing my hair from black to purple, I decided to stay with black. Purple hair requires money for maintenance, and I'm not expecting to go back to full-time work for another couple of months (more on that another time). I need to be wise about my spending. Dyeing my hair black costs a paltry $3 a month... so black it will be. At least for now.

Though I'm nixing the color change, I'm going ahead with the style change. I decided to go with a roughly shoulder-length style about 15" shorter than my current length. I have an appointment with a hair stylist tomorrow afternoon. I'm a little nervous as I've never seen this stylist before... and, of course, it's not every day that I have 15" of my hair cut off. :-/

Feels like I have a few of these guys in my stomach...

  2. Eep! The anticipation is already killing me!
I have to live vicariously through you, because I don't think I'll ever be brave enough to do it, hehe.

    1. It's probably the most drastic change one can make to one's appearance in five seconds or less. I suppose there is some bravery involved.

  5. Good luck! That's a lot of hair to cut off so I'm sure most of it is in good condition. Have you considered donating it? I donated mine through Little Princess Trust; info here:

There are other charities which are looking for hair donations but many will not accept dyed hair, so if you are looking for a US charity be sure to check the rules!

    1. Thanks! I researched hair donation and managed to find only one charity that will accept dyed hair.

There was a scandal earlier this year about the most well-known charity here in the US. They throw away about 80% of the hair they receive. Some of the usable 20% is not donated but sold, to the tune of half a million dollars a year. Their director basically said, "Send money, not hair." I urge anyone considering donating hair to do some research first. Your hair may not end up on the head of a cancer-stricken child like you think.

    2. That's a real shame. I looked into the UK charities in quite a lot of detail and Little Princess Trust seemed to be fairly legit when it comes to using the hair at least. I disliked that Wigs For Wigs only provide wigs for children with alopecia and not for cancer treatment because that's 'only temporary hair loss' and thus deemed less important, whereas Little Princess Trust do both.

Even if my hair got sold or something I guess it wouldn't really matter because I would have cut it off anyway. Just nice to think I helped!

    3. It is a shame. There are legitimate charities, one just has to do a little research.

  6. Good luck! Cutting my hair was one of the best things I did for my appearance, and it felt so light and manageable afterwards. Though mine wasn't long enough for it, I would recommend donating your hair as in comments above, as a good friend of mine who had leukaemia really appreciated her wig from donated hair.

At worst, you can grow it back - after all, it's only hair. :)

  8. Good luck! Get them to catch the hair when they cut it so you can make it into matching extensions or hairpieces for different hairstyles, I love the bun I made out of synthetic hair.

    Can't wait to see pictures!

    1. Not so much shampoo... but conditioner. I will save a fortune on conditioner. I'll need only about a third of what I have been using.

  10. I had purple hair, and it was the best color for me ever. Now it's black and yes, it's much cheaper to maintain and everything, but...I still long for my lilac locks.

Best of luck with your new hairstyle! I hope it looks amazing.
