Kitchen Makeover: Dining Table

Here's a fabulous example of the transformative power of paint. A few years ago, I scored this table at a thrift store for $20. It's made of solid wood, as evidenced by the weight. Picking up the top is like lifting an entire oak tree. :P It also has two leaves (it's a tree, I tell you!) which store under the table and pull out to approximately double the size of the tabletop. I used it in my workroom for several years, where it suffered the indignity of misplaced paint without complaint.

Due to its exemplary service record (and attractive curvy legs), it was promoted to the dining room. To prepare for its new duties, it got a makeover. Sanding the top to remove the old paint was quick and easy, but I was dreading painting because of all the curves and indentations on the legs. Then, a stroke of good luck! I was looking through paint chips at Lowe's and saw that the "Sumptuous Purple" chip had a little note that said "also available in spray paint." Sweet! Spray paint would be MUCH easier for the curvy legs, and I could use matching latex paint for the flat surfaces.

This was my first time trying Valspar paint. The spray paint was satisfactory - the spray pattern produced a lot of fine mist, resulting in less-than-stellar coverage and too much overspray. Not a bad choice, but I still prefer Rust-Oleum Painter's Choice for spray paints. The Valspar latex paint was good; I would use it again.

And the Sumptuous Purple color? Gorgeous! I love it. I think I found my perfect shade of purple. :D (Of course, my camera refuses to capture said perfect shade. I had to heavily adjust the colors in this photo. The floor isn't actually orange and the wall isn't actually pink.)

This is a good representation of the true color (at least on my screen):

The table will enjoy wearing the bat tablecloth I picked up last October. :) Now to add candles, a centerpiece and so forth...

Total cost of this project was about $19. I paid $15 for a quart of latex paint (I used maybe 1/3 of it) and $4 for a can of spray paint. The tablecloth was $8.

    1. As soon as I saw the color on the table, I thought, "What else can I paint this color?" :D

  2. Oh wow... I can't even... Amazing what a simple coat of colour can do! The table looks great! But I also love the table cloth. I'm so jealous of all the cool stuff you can buy in the US...

    1. Thank you! Paint is magic in a can. :) We are lucky with all the Halloween stuff that's available here; the tradeoff is we have to survive the overbearing Christmas season every year.

    1. Thank you! My local thrift store has a 50% sale every Saturday, and that's when I scored the table. Half price at a thrift store... now that's my kind of shopping!

  6. Awesome color!! You have such great ideas (and so simple, too)! And I am DROOLING over that tablecloth. I don't suppose you would care to let us know the brand name, or perhaps where you acquired it??? Name your bribe... ;-)

    1. Thank you so much! I'm happy to tell where I got the tablecloth - it came from a Jo-Ann store. It's seasonal at Jo-Ann, but Amazon carries similar tablecloths which are even battier. One is at http://www.amazon.com/Heritage-Lace-Going-44-Inch-Topper/dp/B004ZIV14C/ref=pd_sim_hg_1. You can find more by searching "heritage lace bats."

  8. I laughed when I saw the paint can “indignities” your table was subjected to. I've had a few tables like that, too. That's the beauty of real wood though - you can always fix it! That is an amazing colour of purple - perhaps some matching chairs soon? :D

    1. I'm sure my "new" (secondhand, of course) workroom table will suffer similar indignities. But it's a cheap laminate deal, so I'm afraid there are no promotions in its future.

Yes, I do need chairs. I haven't had much luck finding any I like. But now that I've finished the table, it's time to redouble the search effort.

  9. So many kinds of awesome! I just love a painted table - it makes such a statement. And I agree with the Insomniac ... Chairs are a must!

    1. Thanks! I've been using the chairs that came with the laminate table, and they look silly. The hunt is on for classier seats!

    2. We were just at Ikea and they have some reasonably priced, unfinished wooden chairs. They also have an 'as is' section. That might be worth a look.

    3. Yes, thanks for the tip, they're on my list. The chairs are fairly plain, but I could always add wood appliques or something. And the flat pack means I could actually get a whole set in my car. :)

  10. Holy cow! It's beautiful. I love that purple colour!! The bat cloth is perfect letting the vibrant colour shine through! I have done lots of thrift bargains that have been transformed with colour. Old furniture are the best :)

    1. Thank you very much! I love transforming furniture. It's probably good that only small pieces will fit in my car; otherwise, I'd be bringing home old furniture left and right.

  13. Did you spray the hinges of the leaves? I never know what to do with hinges.

    1. That's a challenge I didn't have to face this time because the leaves don't have hinges. They slide from underneath the table on wooden rails. It's an interesting design that I'd never seen before. I'll try to get a photo for the final reveal post.

  14. Wow. Love the look. The purple with the spider table cloth is worth it.

  15. When I first saw the table being entirely purple I thought "Well, I DO love purple, but that's too much of a bright colour, even for me!" And then you put the bat table cloth on it and suddenly it was just the right amount of purple to really come through the black and it is FABULOUS!

    1. I think it's what interior designers would call a "pop" of color... though in the photo, it looks more like an explosion because of the heavy color adjustment. ;)
