Sewing Machines Dress

I spotted this black and white sewing machine print fabric at Hancock Fabrics and could not resist. It's mediocre quality, but it was worth buying with a 50% off coupon. I used it for a dress.

For the bodice portion of the dress, I used my altered McCall's 6027. I omitted the front seam by cutting on the fold. I combined this with the skirt portion of the jumper from Simplicity 2868.
Simplicity 2868 (out of print)

Alas, the resulting dress was too tight across my big ole butt womanly curves. I solved this problem by adding four godets starting just below the waist.

As for the styling, I'd love a critique from those of you who are more stylish than I (which is pretty much all of you). The tights are too sheer and opaque black would look better, yes? What do you think about the black and white shoes?

  1. No your style is wonderful! You look great and cute in the dress (the whole ensemble), you did a great job with the dress, and I think the fabric is perfect, for 50% off, you look like a million dollars :)

  2. I think you look great! I love the tights and the shoes withe the dress!
Do you ever wear necklaces? I think a longish necklace would look great with this look and give it a vintage vibe.

    Darling as always!

    1. Thank you! I have several necklaces but can never quite decide how to combine them with outfits. Good idea on the vintage vibe; I have a longer necklace that might work for that. :)

  3. I think the sheers are fine, but opaques would look good also. Maybe sheer for spring/summer and opaque for fall/winter?

I LOVE those shoes with the dress, the whole thing looks great! And I agree with Meagan Kyla about a necklace, that would add pinache. ;-)

Thank you! I love the shoes and they're quite comfortable, but I'm never sure what to wear them with.

  4. Super cute! What if you had a trim fitting cardigan done up at the waist? Or a white long sleeve button up blouse?

    1. Thank you! I actually added a black cardigan when I went out today. :)
Hmm... I hadn't thought about a white blouse. Good idea!

  5. Shoes are cute. The themey-themey part of me says it needs one of those scissors-chatelaine necklace things, but I'm goofy like that.

    1. I'm goofy, too. :) I have a scissors and sewing machine pendant that I put on then took off. It seemed HUGE but possibly that's because I haven't worn necklaces in a while.

  9. Absolutely nothing wrong with sheer tights. I tend to prefer opaque on me, just because they're a bit thicker and don't run so easily, or fishnets, because they stretch more. I think either black or white tights would work here, or even layered fishnets.

    The shoes are *perfect*.

    1. Sheer tights seem dressier to me, though I'm not really sure why I think that. I usually go with opaque. Layered fishnets is a good idea! I'll have to try that. :)

      Thank you!

    1. Thank you! Since I don't know what the office temperature will be (pleasepleaseplease don't be an oven like my last office!), I will probably wear my default cami/tank under a cotton short-sleeve cardigan with a cotton skirt. And my new shoes, of course. :)

  12. The shoes are very cute! And I think white tights (just to be different) would look lovely with them :)
